the flour house, highett

The Flour House in Highett is not your ordinary bakery. Entering through the doors, you will instantly be hit with the smell of freshly baked bread.

The Flour House in Highett is not your ordinary bakery. Upon entering, you are instantly met with the smell of freshly baked bread. At the front counter is their display cabinet decked out with the most delicious pastries, and sandwhiches. There, you will also find their self service bread display with shelves and shelves of the freshest loaves ready for you to take home.

Continue to walk through the warehouse style cafe and you will find a beautiful wooden pergola adorned with ALL the greenery, briinging a warmth and homely feeling to an otherwise vast space.

The back of the cafe is dedicated to their fully operational bakery and kitchen. There is a working flour mill (where they mill their own grain sourced from local Victorian farmers) as well as shipping container kitchen and gallery style prep area with industrial baking ovens - all on display for people to witness and appreciate the farm to table ethos that is synonymous with The Flour House.

Besides their beautiful bakery goods, The Flour House also has an amazing sit down menu of classic and contemporary cafe style meals. Mamma could not go past the salmon on Finnish Rye, while the kids opted for scrambled eggs on toast and a super flakey and buttery croissant.

If dining in is not on the cards, the takeaway window located at the front of the cafe is the perfect way to grab a coffee and pastry before moving on to your next adventure!

Railway Wine in Highett offers a warm, moody vibe within its indoor setting while the beer garden out back is perfect for sunny days with the kids. Come for a glass of wine (or two) and some delicious food, while the kids play on the cubby/climbing frame.

Boasting an impressive wine list (which also includes beers, cocktails and non alcoholic options), patrons are able to order food from Railway’s sister restaurant next door, Teo’s.

There are no wrong choices when it comes to wine and carbs, but this Mamma‘s go to order is a glass of Shiraz and a plate of spaghetti carbonara, liberally adorned with crispy guanciale.

Since this is a local for Mamma’s family, the little ones usually go between ordering the kids margherita pizza and spaghetti bolognese (but classics like chicken and chips are also available for those with discerning taste buds). When it comes to pizzas, there is plenty to choose from, including gluten free and vegan options, though little Mister can never go past a pepperoni.

Open from late afternoon onwards, the kids can be fed and the wine can be drunk all before bath and bedtime - what a win!
