discover french island, 4WD naturaliste tours
This is a truly unique experience that will create lasting memories – after all, it’s not every day you get to travel by ferry to a remote, off-grid island that’s twice the size of Phillip Island!
The serene and tranquil French Island is simply captivating. With sprawling protected Nature Parks making up over 70% of the island, rolling cow-filled hills, and koala-hugged trees, it’s a nature lover’s paradise.
Mamma’s crew were enchanted by the abundance of wildlife - and the tranquillity - it feels like the whole island is yours to explore – far more peaceful than typical tourist spots.
Naturaliste tours begin the moment you step onboard the ferry, departing from either Stony Point or Cowes terminals. It’s just a quick 15-minute ride across – and if you’re lucky, you may spot dolphins, or even whales in season!
Once you reach French Island, your tour guide will meet you in a 4WD vehicle. Explore the ever-changing terrain as you bounce along to your first stop. Mamma’s Little Ones recommend sitting at the very back of the bus where you can really feel the motion over the back wheels– the giggles as you bounce out of your seat are priceless!
Your first stop is Mandalay Park, a restored farm stay with the loveliest owners. Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and learn about daily life on French Island, as well as some fascinating history. The island is home to just 131 residents, one school, a general store, and a fire station. There’s no council jurisdiction and no police stationed on the island!
After lunch, explore the farm, home to wild peacocks, dozens of bird species, stunning horses, and SO. MANY. KOALAS! Mamma has never seen koalas that are so active! These cuties often sit low in the trees, and if you’re lucky, you might even hear them calling to their mates.
When it’s time to move on, hop back on your 4WD and continue exploring the island. Visit the Chicory Kilns, wander through nature paths, take a short hike up to the Pinnacles for breathtaking island views, and stop along the way to greet the echidnas.
Finally, board the ferry back home, carrying with you lifelong memories – and a resolve to return again.. very soon!
