cat cafe, melbourne

Cat lovers rejoice- this is a crazy unique experience!

Whether you are a cat person or you are not - this is a crazy unique experience! Let Mamma explain…so yes, it is a cafe and there are over a dozen or so cats! Essentially, you can play with cats, pat the cats, brush the cats, dine with the cats and relax with the cats. It feels like you are a guest in their two story home, where they sleep and roam freely.

You are welcome to also roam freely, grab a cat toy to entice some cat play or order a snack and just watch the residents slink around! They have all kinds of places to escape to or explore and Mamma loves that these cats are all rescue cats.

On our visit here one of the feline keepers whipped out some fresh blades of grass for the cats and they came clambering from all directions to munch on some grassy goodness.
Very odd and very cool.

Mamma says this is a place for peaceful and quiet times with some special little animals. We love it. You can book a minimum of 1 hour visit (that includes a drink) and you can order more food if you like or additional time can be booked via the website.

Mamma’s special mentions: Before you get excited and tell the little ones - kiddos need to be 8 or over to enjoy and experience here!

igloo wonderland @ the wharf hotel, melbourne

This will take your next city based catch up to the next level!

This will take your next city based catch up to the next level. From now until the end of August, you can wine and dine in your very own igloo, right along the banks of the Yarra. You will find The Wharf Hotel at the World Trade Centre end of town and you can’t miss these pop up domes. They are ideal for this time of year as you are out of the weather, and come complete with cosy blankets and fluffy cushions.

Booking one of the mini igloos gives you a share platter, plus a bottle of wine, a jug of beer or - more aptly - a thermos of mulled cider. You can bring the kids too! The igloo is available for 4 to 8 guests and the door zips up so you can trap them all inside, away from the water. Plus there are kids meals on the menu if they aren’t so keen on sharing with the adults. There are two BIG Mega igloos on offer - it sure is cool way to enjoy the outdoors … without being in the outdoors!

Mamma's special mention: Dining at The Wharf Hotel, you have the city at your fingertips! Check out where Mamma has explored with the tribe on our Mamma Knows City page.

ice slide by eureka skydeck, city

It's BACK for 2017 WINTER School Holidays!

It's BACK for 2017! The heart of Southbank will be transformed once again into an action packed winter wonderland for the July school holidays this year, when Eureka Skydeck launch the giant Melbourne Ice Slide for kids, parents and the whole of Melbourne to enjoy.

Perfect for the winter school holidays this Ice Slide opens on July 1  – July 16, a thrilling 40-metre long, four-metre high ice slide will be set up alongside Southbank’s waterfront, allowing passers-by to experience the thrill of riding an inflatable tube on the exhilarating journey down the slide.

The Mamma's plucked up the courage and gave the slide a whirl last year and what can we say - It is FAST!

Once you are seated in the tube, a push off the edge and you go flying down the ramp along the ice. There is a short stretch of flat and some artificial turf to slow down the tube before an abrupt stop at the padded mats. It really is not for the faint hearted! The little kids (under five) can be seated on an adult's lap.  If they are old enough (we feel probably around 6 years) they can even jump on the side on their own in a much smaller tube! In fact our Miss 6's loved it so much they kept going back for more!

Mamma's special mention: Why not make your trip to the city this winter a FULL icy adventure and have a spin at the River Rink at Fed Square? Sessions run for 45 minutes and is a great addition to your city adventure this winter.

bug lab - little bugs: super powers @ melbourne museum, carlton

Get ready to bug out with an exhibition experience like no other at Melbourne Museum opening in June.

Get ready to bug out with an exhibition experience like no other at Melbourne Museum! The Touring Hall has been completely transformed, in a visually stunning collaboration between Weta Workshop (the creative forces behind The Lord of the Rings) and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa - Bug Lab is an amazing interactive display. You can get up close with some of the world's smallest creatures but in giant ridiculously life like form. In the six immersive zones you will follow the story of six different bugs, experiencing these creepy crawly's like never before. The bees are out of this world and the dragon flies - well this is Mamma's favourite! Expect to see large-scale models, interactive Lab Tables, hands on activities, challenges to test your skills against the insects and so much more. Plus we can learn about how our little friends are inspiring technology in our human world.

Once you have been inspired at Bug Lab, be sure to explore more of what the Museum has on offer including the IMAX screening of the 3D documentary Bugs: Mighty Micro Monsters (we look forward to this) and then to move on to the permanent exhibition Bugs Alive!where you can see the real thing. Tickets are on sale NOW.

Mamma's special mention: The experiences is incredible - nothing like we have ever seen before. The lighting, the sounds and the visuals - like being in a movie set. In fact you can see our video of the displays here. There were some sections which the three year olds were a little fearful so be mindful when entering the bug spaces. The bugs are BIG.
