the bakehaus, mordialloc
Walking through The Bakehaus is like walking through a Pinterest inspo board… but much, MUCH yummier.

The second you step through the door, you instantly forget that this place is nestled between factories in Mordialloc’s industrial area. Mamma suggests visiting when the dappled sunshine filters through the cake shop’s sheer curtains, creating a dream like setting that is only enhanced by their dreamy cakes and sweet treats. But quite frankly… any time is the perfect time for cake.
Mamma and the 5 year old started with a toasted ham and cheese croissant, for **balance**. What was initially ordered as a means of diminishing Mamma’s guilt about cake for lunch ended up being one of the best toasted croissants ever. BIG CALL. The super buttery, flakey pastry coupled with all its cheesy, smokey goodness was next level.
Now, on to the main event! It was hard to choose between all of the delicious things in the display cabinet (the NYC cookies and cinnamon scrolls were calling Mamma’s name) but in the end, we could not go past the incredibly decadent Biscoff cheesecake and Matilda-esque three layer chocolate cake (IYKYK). Mamma washed it all down with one of The Bakehaus’ signature iced strawberry matcha lattes which, besides being completely hypnotic to look at, was sooooo good.

A favourite amongst locals, Bromley’s Bread is tucked away down a beautiful lane next to Cheltenham Station.
A favourite amongst locals, Bromley’s Bread is tucked away down a beautiful lane next to Cheltenham Station. Their white facade, hanging pots of greenery and outdoor seating transport you to another place… far away from trains and the bustling trade of the main street.
Having slowly expanded over the years across a number of existing shop fronts, the cafe and bakery is a glorious representation of a family business passionately supported by its local customers.
Enter through the first door and you will find Bromley’s bakery, with a display cabinet brimming with delicious sourdough bread, the most decadent brownies and flakiest pastries.
If you would prefer more of a cafe vibe, carry on towards the second entrance where there is plenty of indoor seating, perfect for chowing down on one of their amazing sandwiches. Mamma can never go past the toasted prosciutto and veg filling housed in Bromley’s epic olive sourdough baguette.
Sit back and relax with one of the best coffees around and point the kids in the direction of the magazine rack. There they can pick up a note book and pencil case full of crayons to entertain themselves while you recover from the delicious carb overload.

The Flour House in Highett is not your ordinary bakery. Upon entering, you are instantly met with the smell of freshly baked bread. At the front counter is their display cabinet decked out with the most delicious pastries, and sandwhiches. There, you will also find their self service bread display with shelves and shelves of the freshest loaves ready for you to take home.
Continue to walk through the warehouse style cafe and you will find a beautiful wooden pergola adorned with ALL the greenery, briinging a warmth and homely feeling to an otherwise vast space.
The back of the cafe is dedicated to their fully operational bakery and kitchen. There is a working flour mill (where they mill their own grain sourced from local Victorian farmers) as well as shipping container kitchen and gallery style prep area with industrial baking ovens - all on display for people to witness and appreciate the farm to table ethos that is synonymous with The Flour House.
Besides their beautiful bakery goods, The Flour House also has an amazing sit down menu of classic and contemporary cafe style meals. Mamma could not go past the salmon on Finnish Rye, while the kids opted for scrambled eggs on toast and a super flakey and buttery croissant.
If dining in is not on the cards, the takeaway window located at the front of the cafe is the perfect way to grab a coffee and pastry before moving on to your next adventure!
