Got a little (or big) gamer in the family? Get your skates on and get to Arca Arcade in St Kilda!
This fun, colourful and FREE exhibition at St Kilda Town Hall is definitely not your typical look but don’t touch art experience. In fact, quite the opposite — you’re encouraged to play!
Arca Arcade brings together a collection of custom-built arcade machines that have been transformed into interactive artworks. The machines are inspired by old-school arcade gaming, contemporary art and Māori culture, making for a pretty cool mix of gaming, design and storytelling.
And the best bit? The arcade games are actually playable! So the kids can get their hands on the joysticks and buttons and have a play while checking out the artwork. It’s a great way to introduce them to something a little different without the usual “Mum, I’m bored” that can sometimes accompany an art gallery visit!
Grown-ups aren’t left out either. If you remember spending your pocket money at the arcade, there’s a good chance this exhibition will bring back a few memories. Think Pac-Man, Sonic, Frogger and Space invaders, just to name a few. And be prepared for the kids to challenge you to a game or two!
On until October 31st, the exhibition is free to visit and is located inside the Carlisle Street Arts Space at St Kilda Town Hall, making it an easy one to add to a day out in St Kilda. Plus there’s free 2 hour parking under the town hall - but Mamma’s hot tip - 2 hours might not be long enough!
